Learn more about eye infections.
Eye infections are caused by accumulation of bacteria or viruses in the eye. They may cause the eye to appear red or swollen as a result. Serious cases of eye infections may result in scarring and vision loss. In such cases, it is important to consult an eye specialist immediately.

– Pink Eye/Red Eye/Conjunctivitis: Inflammation of the mucus membrane that covers the front of the eye and lines the eyelids (conjunctiva). Can be caused by viral or bacterial infections, as well as allergies.
– Eye Sty/Eye Stye: Infection of the oil glands on the eyelid. Appearance resembles that of a pimple. Do not attempt to pop styes.
– Corneal Keratitis: Serious infection of the cornea that can lead to permanent scarring and vision loss. May be caused by improper contact lens usage
Depending on the type and severity of the infection, treatment options range from medicated eye drops to minor procedures (eg. incision and drainage of stye).
