Myopia, Hyperopia and Astigmatism

The Normal Eyeball

The eye is like a camera. In a camera, light passes through a lens system and focuses onto the film. The cornea and lens are at the front of the eye and are similar to a camera’s lens system. The retina is located at the back of the eye and is similar to the camera’s film.In the normal eye, light rays of an image pass through the cornea and the lens and are focused directly on the retina to produce a clear image.

A normal eye is able to see far and near without the need for vision correction aids. Nonetheless, it will still develop presbyopia around the age of 40 years old.

What is Myopia?

Myopia (or near-sightedness) is a vision defect where images are focused in front of the retina. This is due to an eyeball that is too long relative to the focusing power of the cornea and lens of the eye.

A myopic eye sees blur at distant but clear at near.

A person with uncorrected myopia may also experience eyestrain, headaches and the need to squint in order to see clearer. Participating in sports activities can be a hassle due to blur vision or having to use optical correction aids such as glasses and contact lenses.

Childhood myopia is a major problem in many developing countries. Some studies have shown that the increase in near work and computer activities, coupled with genetic factors play an important role in this rapid increase of myopia.

Myopia on its own is not as damaging as its degenerative effects on the eye. People with severe myopia have a higher risk of developing retinal degenerations and glaucoma. These conditions potentially lead to irreversible blindness.

If you have noticed vision deterioration, it is important to visit an optometrist or eye doctor. This is to determine if the blurring of vision is due to uncorrected refractive errors or other eye problems.

Treatment options for myopia are wearing of glasses and contact lenses, undergoing the LASIK or Implantable Contact Lens procedure, and undergoing a cataract surgery (if the eye has also developed a cataract).

What is Hyperopia?

Hyperopia (or far-sightedness) is a vision defect where images are focused behind the retina. This is due to an eyeball that is too short relative to the focusing power of the cornea and lens of the eye.

A hyperopic eye sees blur at near but clear at distant.

Similar to myopia, a person with uncorrected hyperopia may experience eyestrain, headaches and the need to squint to see clearer.

Treatment options for hyperopia are wearing of glasses and contact lenses, undergoing the LASIK or Implantable Contact Lens procedure, and undergoing a cataract surgery (if the eye has also developed a cataract).

What is Astigmatism?

astigmatic-eye-astigmatism-lee-hung-ming-eye-centre-rs

Astigmatism is a vision defect where images are focused on different points near the retina. This can be due to irregular curvatures of the cornea and sometimes the lens as well.

An analogy to describe this condition is to liken the cornea to a rugby ball where one surface is more curved than the other. Light rays enter the eye and get focused on 2 different points, therefore causing blur and multiple visions. A cornea that is equally curved in all directions will focus light on a single point, therefore giving clear vision.

An astigmatic eye sees blur at distant and occasionally at near. In severe cases, the eye may see double or triple vision. Astigmatism can occur on its own, or together with myopia or hyperopia.

Treatment options for astigmatism are wearing of glasses and contact lenses, undergoing the LASIK or Implantable Contact Lens procedure, and undergoing a cataract surgery (if the eye has also developed a cataract).
